Ashley’s dad took her, her mom and sister to a park on Father’s Day 2009. He left saying he would be back after he helped his dad with something. One hour later, her mom got a devastating text saying he was gone for good. When they got home, they discovered that he had taken everything he wanted from the home..leaving a disaster. He also took all the money from the bank. He didn’t give any support to his family until the court ordered it. The house was foreclosed on, and the mom had to file bankruptcy.
Ashley was born with spina bifida, is deaf in her left ear, has metal rods in her back for scolosis as well as bowel and bladder problems. She is paralyzed from the waist down and uses an electric wheeelchair. Her mom, who suffers from numerous chronic medical conditions which makes it impossible for her to work, is Ashley’s only caregiver.
Ashley’s younger sister suffers from emotional problems and is suicidal stemming from everything that happened in the home with prior physical and verbal abuse by other family members.
The family has very little money and at times cannot even afford food. They rent a small house that is not fully wheelchair accessible for Ashley. Their 2003 van keeps breaking down but they cannot afford a new one. They desperately need a newer wheelchair accessible van as it is Ashley’s only means of transportation. It is hard to get her back and forth to doctor visits and surgeries because their van keeps breaking down.
